The mental health procedure goes something like this: a) you make an appointment; b) you arrive and fill out paper work and a questionnaire concerning your alcohol and drug (A & D) history; c) then you have a "bio-psycho-social" interview that lasts, usually, half an hour to 45 minutes. The counselor may need to gather collateral information from a variety of sources. Finally a diagnosis is reached.
The counselor then applies American Society of Addictive Medicine (ASAM) patient placement criteria to the six dimensions that ASAM uses to apply intensity of treatment. To summarize briefly: a mild problem would be recommenced to an educational intervention; a moderate problem would be recommended to an outpatient therapy program and a serious problem would most likely be recommended to inpatient or residential treatment.
