Alcohol/Drug Evaluations

Evaluations are the entry point to Chemical Dependency counseling.  Another name for evaluation is an Alcohol/Drug assessment.  No matter what you call them, some evaluations are better than others.  The "eval" is supposed to determine whether a patient has a mild problem, a moderate problem or a severe problem.

Sounds simple doesn't it.  What the evaluator is trying to determine is the level of severity of the problem the patient presents.  No one comes to the evaluation process without a presenting problem.  Most often the evaluation is court ordered due to a variety of infractions; most often driving under the influence (DUI) or possession of a controlled substance (PCS).

The procedure goes something like this: a) you make an appointment; b) you arrive and fill out paper work and a questionnaire concerning your alcohol and drug (A & D) history; c) then you have a "bio-psycho-social" interview that lasts, usually, half an hour to 45 minutes.   The counselor may need to gather collateral information from a variety of sources.  Finally a diagnosis is reached.

The counselor then applies American Society of Addictive Medicine (ASAM) patient placement criteria to the six dimensions that ASAM uses to apply intensity of treatment.  To summarize briefly: a mild problem would be recommenced to an educational intervention; a moderate problem would be recommended to an outpatient therapy program and a serious problem would most likely be recommended to inpatient or residential treatment.

At Anchor Point Counseling Center, a patient can get an evaluation appointment within two to three days of the first contact.  Our prepayment policy has helped insure that patients are solidly committed to attending their appointment.  Therefore, a significant savings of 25 to 50 dollars is made compared to what other providers offer.

Anger/Domestic Violence Evaluations

The same rules apply to anger/domestic violence (DV) evaluation.  There are no ASAM guidelines yet the same decision making process is applied.  The prices are the same.  A significant fact about both programs is the evaluation drives the treatment plan.  The recommended routine of counseling (group therapy) varies from state to state as well as from provider to provider.

A mild problem can be treated with a one or two day class up to a twelve week class.  A moderate problem is often times recommended treatment of 12 to 26 weeks up to a year of treatment.  A severe problem receives 24 hour care for 21 to 28 days with aftercare recommended as a follow up.  The treatment plans suggested for A & D treatment are similar in length for DV treatment the main difference is: residential treatment for DV offenders is usually prison or jail.
